In the Blood by Steve Robinson was an Audible read. It is the first book in the Jefferson Tayte Genealogical Mystery series. The novel is a mystery pure in simple.
Jefferson Tayte is a genealogist with a prickly client that sends him off to England to complete a difficult assignment. Jefferson, who is terrified of flying, finds himself in Cornwall digging up secrets that local inhabitants would prefer to keep buried. Instead, Jefferson soon finds himself embroiled in a real life mystery with lives at stake. Can he unravel the past in time to save the grieving widow?
The book is very well written and narrated by Simon Vance. At no point did the action or suspense leave the reader wanting. The characters are tightly drawn, the plot was well thought out and executed, and most importantly, the entire book was believable from opening to conclusion.
First books by new authors always run the risk of poorly fleshed out characters that are two dimensional. Jefferson Tayte does not fit this mold at all. He has an intriguing backstory that continues on into the next book, he has foibles and strengths, and a personality that matches.
Five stars out of five stars for a well written book that left me eager for the next installments in the series.
