Dragons of Spring Dawning by Margaret Weis & Tracy Hickman

Dragons of Spring Dawning by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman is the third novel in the Dragonlance Chronicles. This is an epic fantasy novel.

This novel had me in tears more than once, great sobbing tears.  Without spoilers, one of my favorite characters dies in this book.  The death wasn’t unexpected but it left me deeply sadden, which is a testament to just how beautifully written the characters are.

This novel finds our intrepid heroes in a desperate fight against the forces of evil.  The evil queen finally makes her appearance and amid the mighty forces of her gathered army, two of our heroes must gather the courage to face evil personified.

There are deep philosophical questions running throughout these novels.  These questions range from what is the difference between infatuation and love, what does it truly mean to love, and faith it’s absence and existence.  These questions are answered in the context of the characters and the book.  These answers set the stage for future world building.

The special bond of the the twins is tested and broken in this novel.  The complex relationship is a source of friction, tenderness, and angst that compromises any sibling relationship.  This relationship ultimately results in acts of incredible tenderness in the midst of terrifying evil.

An easy five stars of five stars for an engaging and deeply moving story.
