The Secrets of Wishtide by Kate Saunders was a Net Galley read. It will be published by Bloomsbury USA on September 13, 2016. It is firmly in the historical cozy category of the mystery genre.
Rarely, do I label a historical novel perfect these days but this is going to be the exception. Truly, perfection in a Victorian cozy mystery. The strictures of society, the class structure, the overall atmosphere is a perfect reflection of the actual novels written during the period. If a Victorian had picked up the novel they would not be shocked by the written word.
Mrs. Rodd is our intrepid protagonist who is widowed and does the odd sleuthing job for her barrister brother. It is the perfect arrangement for a widow of reduced means. This time she’s off to uncover the truth about the woman for one of her brother’s clients. A simple background investigation soon leads to heartbreak, betrayal, murder, and a sociopath returned from the dead.
The reader is quickly immersed in Victorian England and falls in love with every character and description. There is humor, a well crafted mystery, intrigue, and longing. Will the murderer be caught? Will true love find true love? Will family treachery break apart a family? All these questions and more a posed and resolved in this completely delightful novel.
Five stars out of five stars for the perfect Victorian cozy mystery.
