Crepes of Wrath by Sarah Fox was a Net Galley read. It will be published by Alibi on 16 August 2016. It is a cozy mystery genre and set on the coast of the Puget Sound.
Our intrepid heroine, Marley, finds herself on leave of absence from her job in downtown Seattle running her uncle’s restaurant while he’s in the hospital with pneumonia. The one thing she never expected is a call from her uncle telling her that he’s checked himself out of the hospital and then to discover his body on the cliffs next to his restaurant a couple of hours later dead. Who would want to murder Uncle Jimmy and what on earth is she supposed to do now?
Marley, despite being a vegetarian, is a character I could have written myself. The restaurant is a pancake house and pancakes are hands down my favorite breakfast food of all time. Marley’s voice, actions, and personality are completely believable. It took me a couple of chapters to warm up to Marley but once I did, she is quite easily one of my favorite characters of this year. She’s quirky, inquisitive, shy, bold, and determined.
I would quite easily be charmed into sitting down and having a cup of tea with Marley and letting time escape me. She’s a character with depths yet to be plumbed and I’m looking forward to the next novel.
Five stars out of five stars for a well crafted mystery solved by an amateur sleuth.
