The Halfling’s Gem by R.A. Salvatore was my third novel set in the Forgotten Realms universe this year. This was probably my favorite of the three novels because it explored more physical territory than the previous two novels, well and in any game I’m partial to the shorter, stockier, more laid back characters.
This time Drizzt and his friends set off to free their Halfling friend, Regis, who has been kidnapped by a known assassin. Regis stole a gem from his crime lord boss a decade earlier and one of the hired assassins has finally caught up too and kidnapped Regis. Drizzt and friends set out on an epic adventure to rescue Regis from his own folly. Along the way, the reader is transported to coastal cities, sea faring vessels, swampy interior environments, and hostile natives.
Drizzt is once again subjected to racial discrimination but once again rises above it. Bruenor, Wulfgar, Cattie-Brie all play pivotal roles in this captivating foray to rescue Regis. The battle scenes are well written but not the best part of the book for me. I much preferred the character interactions with one another and the cast of characters they meet along the way. The buddy romance subtext between Cattie-Brie and Wulfgar is very well done and in no way feels like a sloppy edition to make the female readers happy.
Five stars out of five stars for a solid, entertaining read that transported me to another realm.
